News agencies are digging and digging for people who were normal enough to have some funny pictures of them drinking/makingout/screwing around on facebook.

Universities are starting to tell their athletes that they may not use facebook or social networking sites because of the ease with which they can be found and publicized.

Best way to avoid this, Keep your private information... private...
I'd advise anyone who does have naught pics of them online, to try to a)limit their exposure, or b) Remove them altogether. ThumpsonHunter S. Thompson, inventor of gonzo journalism; crazed drug user; "exotic consultant" for many movies based upon his works. Heck; this here blog is named after one of his books/movies.

Hunter S. Thompson is no doubt one of my heroes; the stream of consciousness type of writing that Gonzo journalism employs is awesome. Just letting the words pour out a they come; it can be downright therapeutic sometimes.

Well, yesturday I found yet another reason to love Hunter S. Thompson - and that is the movie "Where The Buffalo Roam".

If you're a fan at all of "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas"; then you will love "where the buffalo roam".
It's the same crazy Thompson; but this time on the presidential campaign trail. This time he is played by Bill Murray, instead of Johnny Depp. At first it might seem unlikely that Murray's performance could be as good as Depps - but it is... It's incredible how both of these actors were able to soak up what being like Thompson is like. They made themselves so weird; so crazed; that they seem identical to footage I've seen of Thompson himself. For that kind of footage, you probably wanna check out the documentary "Breakfast With Thompson" - also Awesome.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-21356966342609259492007-07-07T19:10:00.000-07:002007-07-07T19:12:54.852-07:00My buddy Mike: The Real Cookie MonsterHey yall, this here is a short film I made, documenting my friend Mike's insanely unhealthy eating habits.

I made it to:
A) Let people laugh at how gross he is
B) Show him how unhealthy he is and provide him with like an "intervention" of sorts for his diet.

It did not work; he just laughed at himself on video and told me to keep rewinding the part when he burps. It's alright
It is visually stunning; interesting storyline, but it just fails to deliver that "AMAZING" kind of feel. Sure, its chock full of pop-culture jokes and current events (jokes about Bush, Ebay, the Internet, etc.). I dunno, entirely possible that college student aged people are not the demographic being targetted but I kinda feel like we should be if its a movie about an old cartoon series and whatnot that we were exposed to growing up. Lots of young faces in this movie; pretty clear throughout that they did this whole "kids can save the world" moti, Empowering us youngsters and all.

I give it 3 stars out of 5. I have to agree. This movie is awesome. It is so beautiful to watch; delightful to listen to and the plot/storyline/characters and script are awesome. This movie brings us along for the journey of a some-what outcast rat, Remy, who dreams bigger then himself and hopes to become a french gourmet chef. This movie has some of the most classic scenarios and slapstick humor that i've ever seen. Definitely a movie I want to see again while it's still in theatres. As simple as it is; it's still amazing and leaves you with that happy, content, satisfied feeling once the credits start rolling. This movie has reinvigorated my opinion of animated films and has won my support as being among the best movies I have seen (and probably will see) this summer.

Even the animated short "Lifted" that is shown before the feature presentation is awesome.

I loved Ratatoulle and I think most people would tooJoe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-69057196834814234162007-06-28T18:50:00.001-07:002007-06-28T19:05:07.883-07:00 Everyone is selling somethingI'm brand new at this blogging thing; and it has become quite apparent...
That the big blogs I am finding all have one thing in common:
They all seek to sell things to people starting up blogs..
Classes! E-Books! Subscriptions!

I totally understand why; there must be a gi-normous amount of people out there flooding to the blogging industry; trying to make a full-time pay out of part-time blogging.

I did want to make this blog about making money online; and how to avoid scams and how to ACTUALLY profit from your time online. Which I absolutely did with AssociatedContent.com and writing articles for them (albeit at like less than $5.00 on average per article). I'm thinking I might want to change where I had this blog going - maybe not-so-much about making money online.

There are definitely alot of areas of interest of mine that I could write about: current events, life philosophies, fitness/wellness, business startups (offline that is), college, life at my particular college, music, maybe even like promoting local concerts and whatnot. Maybe like a philly thing. Not sure... Guess I have some researching to do tonight and I'll hit you guys up tomorrow with the revised strategy for how I'm going to make this blog.

I just want to make it clear that the goals are in this order:
1) To create content that is beneficial to my readership
2) To make money from the blog

So for now; I shall brainstorm - like all bloggers should, about where their is a need for quality content & at the same time - make sure that I am in the position/authority and have the experience to be able to generate the content in that subject area for a (hopefully) lengthy period of time.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-91029809165426704592007-06-26T16:25:00.000-07:002007-06-26T16:26:40.617-07:00 The Four Factors Of Creating ImpulseI recently did an internship with a door-2-door, business-2-business, sales/marketing/promotion firm. We would sell discount cards to business employees and employers; in person. I strongly believe that the concepts and ideas used for this painstaking sales technique can be changed and adapted for any sales position.

4 Factors
The Best way to get good at using your factors is through experience.
The best way to gain experience is through practice, so see as many people as possible and experiment using these tactics throughout your pitch. It may be helpful to focus on one at a time until you get good.

1) Fear of Loss
-This is a test market promotion
-Only a few left
-Only in the areas today
-Can't leave a business card and can't come back

If we are truly promoting and not "selling", then this is a limited offer that can only be obtained today. Keep in mind, we only print a
limited number of promotions for each campaign, we do sell out, we don't come back unless it's by chance or mistake, we can't leave a business card, and if you are doing your job throughout the day, you probably only have a couple left... so tell them.

2) Indifference
-Truly must not care about the sale... it's a law of averages and sooner or later one of the people I give my pitch to will be a qualified buyer.
-Just promoting
-Somebody else will get it
-If this person is not interested; then do not waste your time or their time with a pitch. You have a lot of people to talk to and by getting the unqualified buyers through with are part of how the Law of Averages works.

The more you want someone to pick up the promotion the less of a chance they will. You want to get them excited about it, but truly don't care if they buy it or not. Have the mentality that someone else will. Also, your body language says a lot.
Act like you don't care with how you position yourself, your mannerisms, facial expressions, etc.

3) Greed
-Everybody is getting it
-The reason why they are is...

People are greedy, plain and simple. If they can see that someone else has participated, they are more apt to consider it. Most people don't like to feel they are the first or only one to participate, so show them they aren't. Use your stubs and tell them how and why everyone is picking them up.

4) Sense of Urgency
-Required to see 150 different businesses have to get going
-Only here today, need to decide now

Remember, our client hires us for word of mouth advertising. They want us to talk to as many people as possible.
Therefore, we have to keep moving at a fast rate. Let the people know you have 150 businesses to see, and that you are running out of time.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-82340911192340734372007-06-26T14:16:00.000-07:002007-06-26T14:25:36.118-07:00 Moola - not gonna make you any moneyThe web game that allows users to play each other in various "chance" games - each time for an all or nothing bet against another human- which makes it difficult at best to advance.

I've been a member with Moola for a while now and can confidently say that I do not believe Moola to be a worthwhile business venture. I have 63 games played at Moola and I've won 31 of those, lost the other 29. This means my win/loss ration is almost 50/50. How am I ever suppose to climb a 30 step ladder if everygame is a 50/50 shot at losing everything I've won thus far.

The highest I've gotten in the Moola rankings is level 8; which was insanely difficult and still only pays $2.56. You can't even cash out at that point. All in all; if its money you seek - moolah is not a great way to get it. They do have some fun odds based multiplayer games though... If you still want to give your shot at the lottery-like chances of winning it big with Moola, then leave a comment and I'll get an invitation over to youJoe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-36949232478352459952007-06-26T09:53:00.000-07:002007-06-26T10:00:33.298-07:00Blog Traffic TipsIn every bloggers life comes a special day - the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else's blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader - you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that's about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.

Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called "traction", which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

Top 10 Tips

10. Write at least five major "pillar" articles. A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good "how-to" lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn't news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.

9. Write one new blog post per day minimum. Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.

You don't have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.

8. Use a proper domain name. If you are serious about blogging be series about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need an easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that's the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you've done a good job!).

7. Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people's blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.

6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger's article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry - it's sort of like your blog telling someone else's blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.

This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important - it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

5. Encourage comments on your own blog. One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.

4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival. A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival enjoy a spike in new readers.

To find the right blog carnival for your blog, do a search at http://blogcarnival.com/.

3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com. To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it's so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it's worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn't bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it's worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have - your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your "Resource Box". You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

1. Write more pillar articles. Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I've listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won't stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.

This article was by Yaro Starak, a professional blogger and my blog mentor. After doing my research I came to a startling discovery. All the local banks that have locations cannot give me any real kind of interest for the kind of money I was letting them hold onto.

For example: Wachovia will give me 0.15% interest on savings accounts between $0.00 - $9,999.00
So, what I discovered, is that in order to get some kind of interest rate you're going to have to go with a direct online bank. Now this does not mean that they are less trustworthy, The online banks I will mention are ALL FDIC INSURED for up to $100,000. This means that arguably they are as safe as an account at a local bank that is insured by the exact same FDIC for the same amount, up to $100,000.

The Online banks I hear good things about are:
INGDirect.com - ING Direct Offers 4.50% APY on savings accounts
HSBCDirect.com - HSBC Direct offers 5.50% APY on savings accounts
EmigrantDirect.com - My personal favorite, they do 5.50% APY also

Most, if not all, of these banks have no minimum balance - I know that Emigrant does not.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-67923652364114362312007-06-25T22:59:00.000-07:002007-06-25T23:07:12.221-07:00 "1408" nothing specialI happen to catch a showing of Stephen King's "1408" with John Kusack and Samuel Jackson and all I got to say is - it's nothing special. Sure, the camera angles were cool. Sure, the backstory was cool. The problem was the frontstory, the plot and character developement never took off. We - like John Kusack - are stuck in a room wondering when one of our many questions will be answered. However, unlike typical movies which resolve questions in the audience by plot-movement, dialogue or character developement - King's movie seems way too much like Open Water. Unsure of any real direction to go; yet seeming to just tye us over with weirder and weirder encounters until the inevitable conclusion that everyone saw coming.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-89133621655566158792007-06-25T21:49:00.001-07:002007-06-25T22:26:50.126-07:00Making Money On ACLooking for a way to make money from the comfort of my own room; I came upon online freelance writing. Yes, their are websites out there that pay you for articles. The website that I worked with is named Associated Content. When you submit articles to them (have to be atleast 400 words, and using a keyword density scanner is suggested), if they accept, then you can get paid anywhere from $3.00 an article to $20. It just depends on how many hits Associated Content believes your article will generate for it. I got mine all hooked up through Pay-pal which I have hooked up with my checking account at the local bank.

There's alittle bit of a delay between when you press submit and when you get the cash in your hand for that article - but I'll take it, its so easy.

I made $300 in about a month just writing about whatever I wanted - including essays I had previously written for classes and would have just thrown out. Instead I made like $5.00 a piece for old essays. Give it a try, Associated Content.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-75918523636574671232007-06-25T21:39:00.000-07:002007-06-25T22:27:02.415-07:00 You'll Be Suprised How Good You Are at Being Other PeopleI'm sure everybody has seen a montage from a Hollywood film. They generally involve a lot of effort by the characters in them, and are usually set to inspirational music. Everyone remembers the rocky montage's, rocky running down the streets of Philadelphia, shadow boxing, and doing sit-ups all to the Rocky theme song. Just thinking about the song makes a lot of people hum 'Getting stronger'. Montages have been a part of Hollywood for many years. One interesting way to deal with stress or large workloads that I've realized is to pretend like life itself is a montage. Let Me Explain. You've got a pile of work and you don't know how you are going to stay focused for the 2+ hours that it's going to require to finish the work - This is where the Montage Theory comes in handy. Instead of stressing out over the workload, now imagine that you are a character in a movie. Or if you prefer, you are the actor. You are filming the montage for your movie, so it's time to get down to business so you can be an inspirational montage for someone else. I find that this method helps me deal with the anxiousness of having a large amount of things to do.I use this method all the time. I wake-up late for class; I have 5 minutes before class starts: I could go back to bed and miss class or I could get up and race to get dressed and sprint to class. After thinking for a second I imagine myself as someone in a montage and I can just picture the film in my mind. Kid wakes up late, scrambles to get dressed and sprints out the door and barely makes it to class on time- so I make it a reality, its fun acting like people in movies because sometimes it allows you to do things that you wouldn't normally do.I find that by taking yourself out of the equation and instead of "acting" like you, play a role. Like play the role of the student from "Van Wilder": waking up late and sprinting to class only to just barely get to his last final on time. Play the role of gym rat once you step in the gym, but once you leave; your life doesn't have to be all-about lifting. Now I'm not a psychologist; but I know that I use this method and it helps me from time to time. I know a few friends who I've told about the montage theory and they claim that it works well for them also- so I hope maybe someone out there can benefit from this article and is able to cope with a stressful situation a little better by imagining it as a Movie MontageJoe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-13881902219011352472007-06-25T21:22:00.000-07:002007-06-25T21:26:31.551-07:00And we're backWell it's been awhile since I've posted; but this time I think I'll be staying for awhile. Not quite sure exactly where I want this site to go; but definitely do plan to discuss making money. Theres all kinds of ways to make money online today that its crazy. I make $300 in about a month writing and submitting freelance articles online during my last month up at school. I would actually write down what I just learned in class but in essay form with my style and sell it online - and i'll discuss how you can do such things. So stay tuned; I'll make multiple listings a day for a bit. Contact me if you want; I could use some inspiration.Joe Nortonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14335051378027291425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1513850282522024114.post-72595914166211717852007-02-04T17:40:00.000-08:002007-02-04T17:44:00.459-08:00and god said... let their be a blogThats right folks.
Grand opening of the Fear and Loathing in College Blog.
Getting this site linked up to my youtube so that you guys can easily get back and forth to my videos.
